The Amistad Center for Art & Culture

April 22 – September 23, 2012

Slide-1997.61A-H

This exhibition celebrates 25 years of partnership with The Amistad Center for Art & Culture by connecting studio portraits from their Simpson Collection with artworks by two former MATRIX artists, Glenn Ligon and Dawould Bey. Together these works address a transition in representation for African Americans who have seen multiple shifts in depictions that are finally moving toward nuance and accuracy. The exhibition asked visitors to make a self-portrait with words or take a self-portrait with the studio backdrop.
