The portraits in this gallery are self-representations composed by past MATRIX artists of the Wadsworth Atheneum. Whether inspired by memories and experiences, or evidence of self-discovery, these portraits are reflections of the artists’ lives and personas. Some confront us directly while others are more elusive, challenging our perceptions about society, the passage of time, and our surroundings. These artists have chosen a variety of media to express themselves, inviting us to question their approaches and methods of engaging the viewer. As we encounter each artist, we are reminded that self-portraits can be highly personal, provocative, and capable of communicating meaning beyond a sense of self.
