Charles Willson Peale, American, 1741-1827, (L): Eliza Boardman Clerc, 1822, (R): Laurent Clerc, 1822, Oil on canvas, American School for the Deaf Museum, West Hartford
In collaboration with the American School for the Deaf (ASD), this exhibition paired portraits of ASD co-founder Laurent Clerc and his wife Eliza by Charles Willson Peale with a film created for the installation, Portrait of a Community: American School for the Deaf. Using American Sign Language, 150 people at ASD share their names, connection to the School, favorite things and hopes for the future, connecting almost 200 years of history at the school.
